Forex (foreign exchange) trading is the buying and selling of currencies on the global market. Currencies are traded in pairs (e.g., EUR/USD), and traders profit from correctly predicting whether one currency will strengthen or weaken against another. The forex market is the largest financial market in the world, with over $7.5 trillion traded daily. Learn more in our forex course.
CFDs (Contracts for Difference) are financial derivatives that allow you to speculate on the price movement of an asset without owning it. You can trade CFDs on shares, indices, commodities, currencies, and cryptocurrencies. CFDs let you go long (buy) or short (sell), meaning you can potentially profit from both rising and falling markets. Learn more in our CFD course.
We strongly recommend starting with a free demo account, which requires no money at all. When you are ready for a live account, most brokers accept minimum deposits of £100–£500. However, we recommend a minimum of £500–£1,000 to allow for proper position sizing with micro lots while following the 1% risk rule. Never deposit money you cannot afford to lose entirely.
Yes. Forex and CFD trading carry significant risk, especially when leverage is involved. Statistics show that 70–80% of retail trader accounts lose money. However, with proper education, disciplined risk management, and realistic expectations, you can learn to manage these risks effectively. Our courses place heavy emphasis on risk management for this reason.
Leverage allows you to control a larger market position with a smaller deposit (called margin). For example, with 30:1 leverage, a £1,000 deposit gives you £30,000 of market exposure. While this amplifies potential profits, it equally amplifies potential losses. In the UK, the FCA limits retail leverage to 30:1 on major forex pairs and lower ratios on other instruments. Learn about managing leverage risk.
We recommend beginners start with swing trading on the daily timeframe. It requires less screen time, gives you more time to analyse setups, and reduces the emotional pressure of fast-paced scalping or day trading. Focus on learning one simple strategy well, such as trading with the trend using basic support and resistance, before exploring more complex approaches. Explore our strategy guides.
For beginners, MetaTrader 4 (MT4) is the most popular choice due to its simplicity and widespread availability. MetaTrader 5 (MT5) offers more features for multi-asset trading. cTrader is excellent for intermediate traders who want advanced charting. Many brokers also offer user-friendly web platforms. We recommend trying demo accounts on several platforms to find what suits you best. Compare platforms.
Most traders need 6–12 months of consistent study and practice to develop a solid foundation. Becoming consistently profitable can take 1–2 years or more. There are no shortcuts. Focus on learning properly rather than rushing to make money. The time you invest in education will save you significantly in avoided losses.
Absolutely. A demo account is essential for practising in real market conditions without financial risk. We recommend spending at least 2–3 months on demo, following your trading plan with discipline, before considering a live account. Treat your demo account balance as if it were real money for the most realistic learning experience.
For UK-based traders, always choose an FCA-regulated broker. Key factors to evaluate include: spreads and commission costs, available instruments, platform options (MT4, MT5, cTrader), execution speed, customer support quality, and minimum deposit requirements. Avoid unregulated brokers offering unrealistic bonuses or extremely high leverage, as these are often warning signs.
While it is possible, it is extremely difficult and not the reality for most traders. We encourage our students to view trading as a skill to develop and a potential supplementary income source rather than an immediate career replacement. Building a consistent track record takes years. Never quit your job to trade full-time until you have at least 1–2 years of consistently profitable live results.
